By Marie Holecek
I am very excited to have the opportunity to provide
physical therapy treatment working out of Red Clover Clinic. I graduated from the Mayo Clinic School of Health Related Sciences in 1989 and have been a physical therapist for 35 years. In 2002 I received my Masters in Health Related Sciences from the University of Indianapolis. I look forward to this new phase of my career.
I
graduated from school with a strong interest in outpatient orthopedic physical therapy with a sports rehab emphasis. In particular, I chose to focus on hands-on manual therapy and chose many of my continuing education classes to enhance my manual therapy skills.
By 2002, I had many successes (and some failures) treating my
patients and getting them back to their active lifestyles. But I felt like something was missing from my practice that helped people to get better and stay better. I was active in life and sports and had accumulated a gamut of my own injuries over the years—by this time I was in need of some help myself. I was having shoulder pain and couldn’t swing a golf club without pain. Traditional physical therapy wasn’t helping, and a friend suggested I seek out a physical therapist specializing in
Myofascial Release. I was hesitant to reach outside my box; however, my golf game was too important, so I did it.
Myofascial Release was exactly what I needed—in many ways, life changing. My body felt like a straight jacket had been removed. I felt 10 years younger. Through my own experience, I realized Myofascial Release was the missing piece in treating my patients. In 2003, I began taking classes with John Barnes PT and shifted my physical therapy practice from traditional orthopedics to include alternative holistic care with a mind/body approach.
I take an individual approach to each patient, treating their body, not their diagnosis. In addition to personalized hands-on treatment, I ask patients to be active participants in their treatment by following through with an exercise program and self-treatment at home. I encourage overall wellness and enjoy being part of each patient's health care team on their health and wellness
journey.
